Welcome to The GOOD 30-Day Challenge (#30DaysofGOOD). Each month, we challenge our community members to do something that will improve the world around us—and our own lives. The challenge for September? To connect with other people. In an effort to help us all rise to the occasion, we're going to assign one small task every day. Each morning, we will post the challenge on GOOD.is and Twitter, along with a testimonial from someone on the GOOD team who's already completed it. We invite you to complete all 30 mini-challenges with us! Today, we challenge you to:

Give three compliments.

It was 4 a.m., and time was running out. I had given out two of three compliments over the course of a Saturday evening house party. The challenge wasn't the compliments themselves—the fridge wasn't short on beer, and many of my favorite people were in attendance. The hard part was remembering to give the compliments—because, well, the fridge wasn't short on beer and the sound-system was in full force, making dancing, not chatting, the priority.

It was the point in the evening when it's time go home, but of course, that's often a challenge unto itself in a city with limited transportation options. My friend, who was visiting Los Angeles for the weekend, was happy to drive, though nervous about the freeways at such a late hour. With clenched hands on the steering wheel and a top speed of 45 miles per hour, we crawled back to my neighborhood, parallel parking in a miniature space wedged between a truck and a fire hydrant. We were safely home, and I saw my chance to lay the challenge to rest.

I put my hand on her shoulder. "You're a great driver," I told her.
