Bundy Bans Bottled Water

The Australian city of Bundanoon (or Bundy, as they call it—those Aussies love their nicknames) has become, it seems, the first city anywhere to ban bottled water. From the BBC:
Campaigner John Dee said local opinion had been incensed when a drinks company announced plans to tap an underground reservoir in the town. “The company has been looking to extract water locally, bottle it in Sydney and bring it back here to sell it,” he said. “It made people look at the environmental impact of bottled water and the community has been quite vocal about it.”
The town of 2,500 people held a public meeting to vote on a ban. More than 350 residents showed up and only two people (one of them a representative from the bottled water industry) voted against it. More details at TreeHugger.

This is one of those things I’ve been resisting but maybe it’s time. Are filters ok?
Good for them! Globally, consumers spend about $100 billion on tap water every year. In the US, consumers spent $11.1 billion on bottled water in 2008, and bottled water manufacturers netted $4.5 billion in 2007. There’s a great article detailing the bottled water industry over at economixt – http://www.economixt.com/2009/07/in-context-the-bottled-water-industry
Australian’s, I am one, don’t call this town Bundy (which is the name they actually use for Bundaburg). Sorry, just had to point that out.
It’s a shame I’m not Australian, not that I mind being Canadian.
I wonder if cities in the US can do that legally. That would really begin to raise consciousness.

I live in Phoenix, AZ, and personally, I never touch the tap water unless I’m taking a shower. Our water is so hard, and full of chemicals like flouride that it just tastes horrible, and almost seems to make you MORE thirsty. However, My mom lives in Malvern, AR, and when I go out to visit her, I don’t drink anything but the tap water. I guess it all really just depends on where you’re living.
