Picture Show: Kitintale Skate Park in Uganda

  • Posted by: GOOD
  • on June 3, 2009 at 8:00 am

Yann Gross’s “Kintintale Skates,” offers a glimpse at the first skate park in East Africa. Located in the a working class suburb of Kampala, Uganda, the park was created both for and by local kids, without assistance from either NGOs or government. Gross describes it as both a source of pride and empowerment, a space that not only keeps kids out of trouble, but fosters the development of a real sense of community. It’s one defined by respect and solidarity, and it feels like a realized dream.

What a great looking park! Skate parks can save the world.

Incredible!  It’s so awesome that the kids did this for themselves…probably recognizing that the government, among others, probably would not provide much of anything.

    Why isn’t anyone photographed skating?

Correction: That should be in ‘a’ working class suburb of Kampala. Kampala is the name of Uganda’s largest city.A very nice story though, and great pictures.

How can we send these “kids” some gear?  It’s an awesome feeling to be empowered, but feeling supported can be even awesomer.

Just one picture of someone skating? Ugh… maybe if the photographer knew anything about skateboarding then these pictures wouldn’t have been so insulting to skate culture. FAIL.

Besthand you poor ignorant…Yann G. is certainly a better skateboarder than you’ll ever be, so think a little bit before talking about sthng you don’t know. If you want to look at skateboard tricks you should go and buy a skateboard magazine. The purpose of the pictures is to talk about kids living in a slum who realized a dream and how proud they are of what they did.Peace.
