The Repair Manifesto

The Dutch design collaborative Platform 21 has launched a new project to promote repairing things as an alternative to recycling them or throwing them away. See their “Repair Manifesto” below.

Over on the Platform 21 site you can also find a longer introduction to the project, an article on repairing plastic chairs, and a paean to duct dape.
I’m totally on board. I love the idea of repairing things, especially for reasons 5, 7, and 10 in the manifesto above. And while duct tape is probably the star of the DIY repair world, I’m a big Gorilla Glue evangelist.

Kind of a bizarre contradiction that on the front page of this site you’ll find an ad for Apple Computers. Microsoft and Apple are all about making computers obsolete too early. With GNU/Linux you can keep computers pretty much running forever.
I’ve seen functioning Apple IIs within the last year. Mac Classics too.Apple computers tend to be pretty bomb, actually. Repairable in the sense of the manifesto? dunno, though my old g4 macbook has a new DC inboard wired to it after years of kicking the old, pre-MacSafe cord. But durable as any computer has a right to be. It isn’t Apple making their computers obsolete, it’s Moore’s Law.
…… every company and designer should strive to live and design by this manifesto… ♥
Jan Chipchase’s Future Perfect is a great addition to repair explorations.
