As you probably know, when you go to the grocery store, most of your non-luxury items are tax free. Your bread, and milk, and meat all comes without a tax. This is for the obvious reason that people absolutely need to buy food and it shouldn’t be more expensive for them just so the government can make extra money. But that all may change in Phoenix in the next few months. In a fairly shocking decision, the Phoenix city government is going to begin levying a 2 percent tax on any food you buy. Buy a gallon of milk for you kids, there is 2 percent tax for the city of Phoenix. (People on food stamps are excepted. If you can just barely afford your groceries, though, you better have an extra 2 percent lying around.) Phoenix’s mayor argues that while people need to eat, they also need basic services like police and firemen, and without closing gaps in the city’s budget with a food tax, they wont be available. What do you think: Is a food tax reasonable or unacceptable?

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories
Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.
While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.
When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.
Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
