We've overheard some speculation that scandal is afoot in China, what with the hosts themselves taking an unprecedented-and impressive-number Olympic medals so far.
The Times and the Shanghaiist both sport some excellent interactive maps of wins around the world to get you up to speed on the numbers. While China is hot on America's tail with a current count of 89, there's nothing fishy about their success; the Economistlooks back at past games to show it's no big surprise China's gaining so much ground, statistically speaking. But that's not to say they're off the hook...
The scandal is less in how many wins they've actually accrued and more in how they've accrued them. Apparently we're not the only ones who kinda feel like the immensely talented gymnasts on China's women's team look like they're about 8 years old... Today the IOC officially agreed, and is carrying out an investigation into the ages of China's prodigious gymnastic team, following allegations that some of their girls are still sporting baby teeth. Of course, we are not down with cheating. Especially when it comes to the Games' less-than-gracious hosts. But that will never change the fact that we found watching He Kexin (even if she does get stripped of her medal) defy gravity on the uneven bars totally jaw-droppingly awesome.
