The winter season is a magical time, my favorite of the year. The peaks and hills get covered in a fresh coat of white providing a palate for all of us artists to use our minds and imaginations to draw our own lines on the mountains. But they won’t be here forever if we don’t all take some time to protect them.

My dad is an environmental scientist, and I grew up on the beach in Southern California, but I was always drawn to the mountains—my name is Forrest, obviously. It’s our duty and our job to help protect the places we love to go to—the oceans and the mountains. I got started with the nonprofit Protect Our Winters in order to do that. We recently got back from a trip to talk with senators on Capitol Hill and the White House to represent the winter sports community in discussing how climate change is impacting mountain communities. It’s all about getting educated ourselves so we can educate others. It starts with these five: Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Recycle, Reimagine. Below are some additional ways you can be part of the solution:

SUPPORT COOL COMPANIES

There are many environmentally friendly brands in the snow industry. Look into how and where your products are made and support companies that care about the environment.

LIVE AN EXAMINED LIFE

We have an obligation and stewardship to help sustain the places we enjoy. Being in nature is the first step to better understanding what we need to protect. The mountains and oceans provide us with everything. It’s time to give back.

GET POLITICAL

Support issues that are important to you nationally and locally. There are a lot of issues out there in relation to our mountains that will affect the ways we’ll be able to enjoy winter in the future. Vote for the candidates who protect the environment. Find out more at the League of Conservation Voters.

RIDE GREEN

Go to resorts like Squaw Valley and Mammoth that support climate change advocacy and renewable energies like wind and solar. Look for resorts that focus on reducing emissions, protecting wildlife habitats, and that care about water quality. If they don’t, write a letter and tell them they should. Find the best green resorts here.

CARPOOL TO THE MOUNTAIN

Save on gas money, meet new friends, and reduce your carbon emissions.

HIKE

Hiking is a great way to earn your turns. Splitboards and alpine touring skis are awesome, so hike up the mountain in order to reduce your carbon footprint. It may be hard work, but once you ride down, it will all be worth it. Be sure to get educated in the process by taking an avalanche class.

SPEAK UP

Get vocal about what you believe in and engage your friends, family, coworkers, etc.

REUSE

Water is free—bring a water container with you so you don’t have to buy one. Use a thermos for hot tea or soup and a packable or collapsible mug for coffee or hot cocoa. Also: buy used skis or a snowboard. There’s a lot of good gear out there that needs a home.

BUY LOCAL

Support your local snowboard, outdoor, and ski shops. Eat at local restaurants or get food from farmers’ markets.

Reddit user Girlfriendhatesmefor’s three-year-old pitbull, Otis, had recently become overprotective of his wife. So he asked the online community if they knew what might be wrong with the dog.

“A week or two ago, my wife got some sort of stomach bug,” the Reddit user wrote under the subreddit /r/dogs. “She was really nauseous and ill for about a week. Otis is very in tune with her emotions (we once got in a fight and she was upset, I swear he was staring daggers at me lol) and during this time didn’t even want to leave her to go on walks. We thought it was adorable!”

His wife soon felt better, butthe dog’s behavior didn’t change.

Girlfriendhatesmefor began to fear that Otis’ behavior may be an early sign of an aggression issue or an indication that the dog was hurt or sick.

So he threw a question out to fellow Reddit users: “Has anyone else’s dog suddenly developed attachment/aggression issues? Any and all advice appreciated, even if it’s that we’re being paranoid!”

The most popular response to his thread was by ZZBC.

Any chance your wife is pregnant?

The potential news hit Girlfriendhatesmefor like a ton of bricks. A few days later, Girlfriendhatesmefor posted an update and ZZBC was right!

“The wifey is pregnant!” the father-to-be wrote. “Otis is still being overprotective but it all makes sense now! Thanks for all the advice and kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply, I didn’t check back until just now!”

    Redditors responded with similar experiences.

Anecdotal I know but I swear my dog knew I was pregnant before I was. He was super clingy (more than normal) and was always resting his head on my belly.

So why do dogs get overprotective when someone is pregnant?

Jeff Werber, PhD, president and chief veterinarian of the Century Veterinary Group in Los Angeles, told Health.com that “dogs can also smell the hormonal changes going on in a woman’s body at that time.” He added the dog may “not understand that this new scent of your skin and breath is caused by a developing baby, but they will know that something is different with you—which might cause them to be more curious or attentive.”

The big lesson here is to listen to your pets and to ask questions when their behavior abruptly changes. They may be trying to tell you something, and the news may be life-changing.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories

Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.

While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.

When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.

Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
