Map of Every McDonald’s in the Country

  • and said:

I found it interesting to learn recently that the original Farmers Markets were started as a way to get high quality, nutritious food to under served, inner city communities. Over time, they have taken on more of a role for serving yuppies.  Anyhow, my point is that I, or anyone else, can get more calories at McDonald’s for $1 than just about anywhere else. In the next ten years, it will be interesting to see how this infrastructure and efficiency can be used for healthier food.

Just heard about a special offer right now at Barneys Co-op. If you bring in an old pair of denim jeans, you get 20% off a new pair. The offer is through the end of August, and is a nice way to clean your closet and add to it at the same time.

826LA Paddleboat Regatta This Sunday: Support GOOD

For one day a year, the normally serene waters of Echo Park Lake in Los Angeles host a fierce, world-class competition: the 826LA Paddleboat Regatta. And this year, GOOD has thrown our hat into the ring. The competition is serious (see photo) but we’re determined to win—or, barring that, keep from capsizing.

It all happens at Echo Park this Sunday, July 26, at 4 p.m. It’s going to be a blast (have you ever not had fun…

Check out Umair Haque’s Generation M Manifesto. It starts,
“Dear Old People Who Run the World,

My generation would like to break up with you.”

Also, worth reading Umair’s other stuff. Thanks to Scott Heiferman for tipping me off to this post, though Casey has been talking about / amazed by Umair Haque for months.

Jim Brown and Ted Turner are on to something

  • Posted by: Max Schorr
  • on July 2, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Do you remember when Ted Turner called out Bill Gates and Warren Buffett for being the wealthiest man in the world and not giving back enough? He wanted to start a “philanthropic competition.” It worked, or at least did not hurt. The Gates Foundation has since lifted the bar way higher, and higher still with Warren Buffett’s contribution.

This week Jim Brown, the great Lacrosse and Football star turned actor and community organizer, has called out the…

GOOD Event: Street Food in Los Angeles

We’ve always loved food here. Issue 009 was all about it, and we’ve recently started a food blog, Borborygmi. So we’re excited to partner with UCLA and L.A. Commons to launch their 2009 Trekking L.A. season with an exploration of this city’s incredible street food.

Join us this Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mercado La Paloma—a sweatshop turned community center—as we sample some of the best street food in the city. Plus, there…

New Office and Bed Time for Water Issue

  • Posted by: Max Schorr
  • on June 4, 2009 at 2:41 am

This week, we moved into our new HQ at 915 N. Citrus. This is a picture of Beth sanding a desk this past Sunday, the day before we started working out of our new office.

Now, halfway through our first week here, The Water Issue is going to bed.

Morgan is wearing a bright pink branded t shirt for the company he works for.  Casey is dreary eyed.

Everyone is full of good cheer, by now used to these oh so…

Cities

GOOD CEO Ben Goldhirsh is at the Global Innovation Outlook’s first gathering on Cities today. Eager to hear how that goes. Also, the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit is happening in Seoul, where today, the Clinton Climate Initiative launched the Climate Positive Development Program in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council.

3.2 billion people, over half the world’s population live in cities, and that figure may hit 70 percent by 2050. Cities account for more than two-thirds…

Cool project, and those kids are impressive. In the video I like the part when everyone jumps into the water — kind of like the scene in Caddyshack. Seems like a lot of fun. And the flowers look great from the sky.

Thanks for this amazing post, Noella. Seems like you stumbled on something pretty remarkable. Seems like their bigger gift besides saving a couple of acres of rainforest is the proof that integrity exists, the inspiration, the wonderful feeling this provides about the future. I love this. Wow, was surprised by these comments. I appreciated what Barneys did, though of course that by itself will not save the world. What single action will? Yes, it was a recycling program. Yes, we are in a down market, but I thought this program was a creative way to encourage recycling and thoughtful consumption at the same time.

How the Presence of Talent in Cities Could be Worth $124 Billion

  • and said:

That is an amazing piece, Carol.I was struck a while back in meeting Roseanne Haggerty of Common Ground and reading Malcolm Gladwell’s article, Million-Dollar Murray, about the tremendous cost of a chronically homeless person, and that problems like homelessness can be cheaper to solve than to manage, but I had not so clearly seen the positive side of this type of analysis around the Talent Dividend, and wow, that is a strong endorsement for dealing with education.  I vote for Los Angeles to be the first and to win.Carol, where can we see the list of the 16 cities moving in the right direction?
