The Water Issue: An Introduction
Before the dawn of civilization, there were 326 million trillion gallons of water on Earth. Today, after millennia of population growth, industry, and agriculture, there are still 326 million trillion gallons. Unlike other natural resources, we cannot run out of water.
But it doesn’t mean that we always will have enough of it when and where we need it or that we can’t make it too dirty to drink. We have altered the water cycle—from ocean to cloud to ground and back to ocean—by putting 6 billion people in the middle of it. Now, the Earth isn’t generating clean, drinkable water as we’ve come to expect.
But if we start paying attention and change our behavior, there is no need to worry about water. We can use less, limit our effect on the water cycle, and clean and protect our rivers and oceans. We have plenty, as long as we drink responsibly.

DISCUSSION: 17 Comments
It’s so hard to wrap my brain around the notion that despite humanity’s wasteful attitude toward water, that we still manage to have 326 million trillion gallons remaining. There are droughts gripping numerous areas and floods laying waste to farmlands and villages, and yet the one constant is the volume of water that we have access to. Dirty water? Yes. Polluted? Absolutely. Now scientists are proposing that we convert
limestone into lime and then deposit it into our oceans — it will
theoretically react with the CO2 that has already dissolved in the
water, converting it into bicarbonate ions. They believe that these chemical changes will
decrease the acidity of the water and enable it to absorb more CO2 from
the air, thereby helping to reduce planetary warming. Am I the only one who finds this geoengineering idea to be really scary? How might that effect ocean creatures for starters? They should know by now that for every action there is a RE-action, and not always one that produces the desired result.Enough of my rant. In keeping with the idea of water and conservation efforts, perhaps people here will appreciate these “6 Extreme Greenie Water Conservation Tips For The Dazed and Bemused” courtesy of http://www.greenwala.com (the online green social network) — http://www.greenwala.com/community/blogs/all/1199-6-Extreme-Greenie-Water-Conservation-Tips-For-The-Dazed-and-Bemused
i was told that you can live 2 weeks without food an only1 week without water so in the big scheme of things beyond our own individual selfes if we as a people all over the planet will perish at our own hands let a rock come out the sky or something we got absolutely no control over wipe us out but the nukes an messing up our water supplies an others the genocide the stupidity is in all of our hands!!we have say over that from the bum on the street to the people who are running the countries we all have to play our part an role after all the progress we ve made as a people over the past few hundred years we should be wayyyy better off instead of doing the right thing like reporting a problem when it occures companies are watching out for their own behinds while some ones kid is dieing??? an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure so when these big companies get sued for millions an millions for something they kept secret over a extended period of time dam skippy they better pay through the nose.cuz from the time from when the problem started till when they got caught they could have done the right thing the same thing that gets done to you an i when we go 5 miles over the speed limit!!!!wake up people!!!!
First off, the predictions of our demise are greatly exaggerated. There is no appreciable global warming if there is any at all. We are in no danger of ever running out of water. And Eliza, there have always been droughts and floods wiping out villages. There have always been storms and periods of heat and periods of cool. Thinking we live in some ’special time’ is just arrogance at its root. You are dead on about the geoengineering. We have no business experimenting with terraforming on this scale at our present state of advancement. Most scientists can’t even figure out that CO2 has very little to do with warming us at all. How could a greenhouse gas of mediocre potency affect us so quantifiably when it only comprises 0.038% of our atmosphere? You’d do better to worry about taking hot showers since water vapor accounts for 95% of our greenhouse effect lol. Vocal scientists are like vocal realigious zealots, they embellish and exaggerate, its just part of their psych profile. Same thing with the mile wide ateroids destroying all life, not even close to possible. So it is with the global warmists and their doomsday predictions that we’ll all be underwater should the temp rise a few degrees. Hogwash. Its just a power trip to be the vessel of such important knowledge to spread amongst the common folks. Its a lighter form of the delusion a cult leader might use to rally his followers around the end times. Listen to logic, there are still real scientists out there, they just don’t proclaim to the world on a daily basis. They are more like you and I.

im not sure exactly where you were going with that rant, it just sounds generally angry and fearful. what i can tell you is that companies are generally no different than most people. They watch our for their own behinds even if it means the discomfort of others. Have you ever partially blocked a lane of traffic cuz you were trying to get across to the far turn lane? Thats looking out for yourself. Another point, when those companies pay through the nose do you really think that comes out of their pockets? No, it gets worked into the profit equation and anyone that buys their service or product pays for it. This is why most civil suits do not work, it just funnels the costs out to everyone. The company takes a black eye and cashflow irregularities for a short time then back to biz as usual. Many even build in the cost of suits BEFORE they happen. The only route to justice is through criminal prosecution…but then its really the money you are looking for right? Looking out for number one again..hmm. Viscious cycle eh?
Oooo! Thats a great Idea about the lime, the undertaking woudl be enourmous. The suitable place to do it woudl be in a area which has less sea-life so that it will have the smallest effect possible though. Still the effect should be relatively minor as there is such a large amount of water, thus, sadly, even though it’s environmental detriment is certain to be limited, it’s benefit is just as certainly limited.
Regardless, if your worried about the lil fish of the world haveing too little carbon, you shodul rest asured we’ve been over-saturating the water with carbon by dumping so much into the atmosphere for so many years, if anythign the fish should be able to breath a little easier (no pun intended) as over-carbonation would eventually cause problems with the ocean’s life entirely.

to ‘agenius’
your saying that we shodul worry about hot showers whcih is rightly laughable.
However you should be aware then that the evaporation rates of water (measured over the last 100 years in africa as a way to help forcast weather) have declined in the last 100 years, but we’re getting hotter…
Regardless, I don’t think this artical really has much, if anythign to do with global warming, so why are you even bringing that up? Smooth move exlaz =p
No seriously, there is a very real effect man has on the environment he lives in, it’s silly to think you can’t have an effect on a closed system. Drop a single drop of food coloring into a bathtub for an example. In an hour check the color vs a fesh glass of water.
That is goign on in a mcuh larger sence in our lakes and streams and rivers and the ocean.
Did you never question why no motor boats are allowed on a resevoir?
The issue of the artical, as that of my example, is that of contamination by chemicals.
woudl you be willing to drink a glass of water if you knew it had some paint thinnner in it? ‘maybe’ if it had X per billion molecules.. But thats why the EPA publishes acceptable guidlines (which sure are debatable – I’d prefer perfectly clean, no chlorine either) but a municipality must follow them, the problem is the water they are taking in is being contaminated in how many thousands of ways.
please stay on-topic.
Interesting to think that the amount of water on this plaint has remained constant. That the water we are drinking today was once rain, snow, sea water or someones or somethings waste.
in el paso, tx. a few years back we going to run out of water, than all of a sudden our politicians bring thousands of troops into our city and many thousands on the way. We water out grass two days a week. Who was the brainchild in washington.D.C. who thought this up
To Q:
yes the shower thing was meant to be laughable, much like the whole Carbon BS. If you knew anything about science you’d realize it was thus. My comments relating to global warming were in response to another poster, happy to bring the exlax i bet you could use a little relief. Your foodcolor analogy, though colorful
, lacks relevance. There are many reasons why motorboats are not allowed on some resevoirs. Most domestic water sources are not adequately filtered to get out certain chemicals. I’m arguing that we need better filtration with intake from a large source linked nationally. How’s that for on topic? Furthermore, man does have an effect on the environment, but most of those ways are ignored in favor of others that allow for wonderful scams like Cap and Trade. Land clearing and using asphalt, concrete and glass in our cities has a much larger effect than CO2 could ever have. But I digress as I’m sure you will be more than willing to point out. Final point: Water is essential. Do what is necessary to secure it and clean it.
You know all you tree huggers that want to save the planet, don’t bother the planet will still be here, we won’t, the earth doesn’t need oil an it will readjusted itself after it has declared us an evolutionary dead end an start all over again.
Law of Conservation of Mass
First, the earths gravity is not quite strong enough to retain hydrogen atoms. Therefore, we do not have the same amount of water we did in “the beginning”.
Secondly, regardless of the effects on distribution of water caused by weather and any other global climate issues it seems clear that it is getting increasingly difficult and expensive to provide safe drinking water to “the masses”. There are only two real solutions and we should be doing both… Clean up the environment and producing fewer people…
we all are doing the same thing, you just don’t relize this, every time you start your car, it’s not just the Big company’s its you and I and everyone else, admit it, then change it, we could of have the smog free cars during the fifty’s but no it’s money and the hell with everything else, Conservation now, what a joke, should of teached your childern to do this, by exsample, now look at us, think people just think of what we are doing, the cars smog goes into the air it rain falls back to earth everything falls to earth, going into drinking water streams lakes, and the ocean, damn us all
I came down for a visit, when home to see friends, the lake I used to swim in, was clear, you can see the bottom, now its full of man made crap, gray shitty waters, Thank you
Take the blame and don’t pass the buck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One paradigm change necessary for us to deal with any environmental issue is to stop thinking that engineering will fix EVERYTHING.The only way is to accept and become adaptable to the rules of nature.
The gathering of lemmings never surprises me. Plain and simple folks. Population control. Do you actually believe that the goverment looks forward to you retiring by 69? Its a burden on the “corrupted” system. AS mentioned, criminal prosecution is the answer to all those polluting willfully and knowingly. Follow the EPA’s threshold standards…they keep going up. Wake up america!
I’ve had the pleasure to be alive nearly 40 years now and I can tell you one thing for sure. There is MUCH less pollution now than there was in the 70s. Despite what the media would have you believe things have gotten better, ARE getting better. You should have seen some of the water that came right out of the tap back then and even into the 80s. The problem with our government is that they only want to ‘clean up’ problems that are easily taxed and/or allow them more control and greater potential ‘deals’ through lobbying. There is plenty of water on this planet in many different forms for it is the by-product of countless chemical reactions that occur quite readily. Worry not about hydrogen atoms floating out of the atmosphere…worry not, there are not too many people on the planet though that is a very popular myth. The problem is WHERE some of them are and under what conditions. We are not destroying the planet. This is a self loathing adolescent fantasy that persists through all human history, buoyed by the ‘need’ to be the generation present at the last gasp of humanity. In a twisted way it allows people to feel more powerful and important than they actually are. Calm down, it’s all gonna be alright. This isn’t the end even though every generation always thinks it is.
agenius,Of course our life is better. We are not hunting animals with spears anymore right….that only means our life style gets improved….but it is no indication that the health of our environment is getting better with our technological advancement. If anything, the technology made us be more aware of our effects on the enviornment. Being aware and wanting to do something about it is by no mean “freaking out” or being a pessimist.
