Jerusalem, Division of

Jerusalem is often seen as the flash point of Middle East tension—Muslims angry that Jews control their third-holiest city, Jews angry that there is a mosque on top of their holiest site. Earlier this year, Israeli officials floated the idea of ceding to Palestinian authorities control of the Arab neighborhoods of the city, as well as the Muslim parts of the Temple Mount. That’s nothing compared to the more radical—and highly improbable—solution of having an outside force like the U.N. controlling the holy city as a neutral site for all. Still, it may be a step toward a more peaceable solution. Then again, does Middle East peace go how Jerusalem goes?
