GOOD Events: New York City’s High Line Park: A Walking Tour

On Saturday, October 24, GOOD design columnist Alissa Walker will be leading a tour of Manhattan’s new High Line park (it’s part of her new book on walking tours in New York), a spectacular elevated railway-turned-public-park that made it into our GOOD 100 list.

And that’s not all. According to Alissa “We’ll also be gawking at the spanking-new architecture sprouting up around New York’s ‘Starchitect Row,’ followed by gelato in the shape of Frank Gehry’s InterActiveCorp Building.”

This…

Event: Time Travel in L.A.’s Historic Filipinotown

Back in 2002, Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti helped designate the neighborhood south of the 101 Freeway and north of Beverly Boulevard, between Glendale Boulevard and Virgil Avenue, as Historic Filipinotown, lovingly known to its residents as Hi Fi. Still, many L.A. residents have little knowledge as to what makes Historic Filipinotown “Filipino” or “historic.”

Our friends over at Public Matters have been hard at work this past year, partnering up with the Pilipino Workers’…

Show Opening: You Are What You Eat

Our friend Mark Menjivar, creator of one of our most popular Picture Shows, “You Are What You Eat,” continues to take his work on the road.

On Wednesday evening, an installation of his work (an example of which can be seen at left) will open—with much fanfare—at Ampersand in Portland, Oregon. At 7:30 p.m., Mr. Menjivar will engage in a discussion with Amanda Peden from Slow Food Portland, an event partner, and visitors can participate in an optional…

Join Us for GOOD Design SF on September 29 in San Francisco

We know—and we suspect you do as well—that design can solve problems. And what better problems to solve than the ones that face our own cities? Last winter, we had seven designers present solutions to Los Angeles problems at GOOD Design LA, the fantastic event that closed out our month of goodness, GOOD December. After another event in collaboration with Art Center College of Design, and an appearance at CEOs for Cities’ annual meeting in the spring,…

826LA Paddleboat Regatta This Sunday: Support GOOD

For one day a year, the normally serene waters of Echo Park Lake in Los Angeles host a fierce, world-class competition: the 826LA Paddleboat Regatta. And this year, GOOD has thrown our hat into the ring. The competition is serious (see photo) but we’re determined to win—or, barring that, keep from capsizing.

It all happens at Echo Park this Sunday, July 26, at 4 p.m. It’s going to be a blast (have you ever not had fun…
