#30DaysofGOOD Challenge: 5. Coordinate a Group Event

Each month, we challenge our community to do something that will improve the world around us—and our own lives. September's challenge? To connect.

Welcome to The GOOD 30-Day Challenge (#30DaysofGOOD). Each month, we challenge our community members to do something that will improve the world around us—and our own lives. The challenge for September? To connect with other people. In an effort to help us all rise to the occasion, we're going to assign one small task every day. Each morning, we will post the challenge on GOOD.is and Twitter, along with a testimonial from someone on the GOOD team who's already completed it. We invite you to complete all 30 mini-challenges with us! Today, we challenge you to:

Coordinate a group event.

The GOOD/Corps team is growing quickly, so we’re always trying to plan group activities to get to know each other. Sometimes they happen and sometimes they don’t. We’re all so busy that making any plans outside of work is hard. So when a new bar opened just three minutes from the office, I sent out an invite to happy hour.

We ended up with a group of about nine. Several of us ordered appetizers and we shared them around the table. It was really fun to relax with my co-workers, who are all people I really want to be friends with outside of work. Happy hour was the perfect place to relax and connect. It’s sure to become a repeat activity.

I love hearing what my co-workers are doing outside of work, but talking about it in the office seems taboo. So during happy hour we talked all about relationships, hobbies, and everything else. It's nice to get to know who these people are when they're not at work. And once the drinks started flowing, we even told some embarrassing stories about ourselves. Knowing that these talented people are just as human as I am has made it so much easier to become fast friends.
