Scott Thrift is an artist, award winning filmmaker, and founding partner of m ss ng p eces, a Brooklyn-based creative agency inspired by “storytelling, technology, and the limitless potential of the web.” He has made hundreds of short films that explore themes of individuality, technological potential, the human condition, and the natural world.
The creator of films like Cool Hunting Video, RESET, a series for Sundance, and the awards film for the Tribeca Film Festival, Thrift is currently transforming our experience of time through his project ThePresent, an annual clock that tracks the seasons rather than every minute of the day.
“ThePresent tells the story of the seasons using subtle gradients of pure color to mark the Equinoxes and Solstices throughout the year,” Thrift’s website explains. “This original wall clock takes an entire year to complete a single rotation using a first of its kind German-engineered annual movement.”
As m ss ng p eces’ second physical product, ThePresent’s clock face features 16 million colors, and the annual hand magically sets itself to the exact day you insert two AA batteries. Each clock is limited edition, one of only 2,000.
ThePresent was made possible by 837 backers through a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign in the fall of 2011. In 2013, Thrift will be delivering the first 1,000 clocks to backers of ThePresent, and imagining what he should do with the other 1,000 annual clocks.
