Oxford Circus, in London's West End shopping district, accommodates 43,000 people and 2,000 vehicles every hour. But not very well. It's chaotic, crowded, and dangerous. Here's an animation explaining the problems and solutions (you'll have to supply your own tunes-the video is totally silent).[vimeo][/vimeo]Good stuff. Many of these improvements-raised crosswalks and curb extensions, for example-follow the suggestions for livable street design from GOOD's transportation issue. And the Shibuya-style diagonal crossings are fun.More about the Oxford Circus project at The Architect's Journal. Thanks, Cliff.
