Day 29: Eat your Veggies #30DaysofGOOD

For October's challenge, we're asking you to get healthy, from your feet to your teeth to your brain.

Welcome to The GOOD 30-Day Challenge (#30DaysofGOOD). Each month, we challenge our community members to do something that will improve the world around us—and our own lives. The challenge for October? To get healthy. In an effort to help us all rise to the occasion, we're going to assign one small task every day. Each morning, we will post the challenge on GOOD.is and Twitter, along with a testimonial from someone on the GOOD team who's already completed it. We invite you to complete all 30 mini-challenges with us! Today, we challenge you to:

Eat your veggies.

Squash, lettuce, radishes, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, broccoli, beets, and carrots. Those are just a sampling of the veggies I get delivered to the GOOD office each week in my Community Supported Agriculture box. If you haven't heard the term CSA before, it's a subscription service where you pay farmers upfront for a weekly share of produce. Farmers love the business model because it guarantees them a revenue stream. Even if their harvest is off one week, they pick whatever is plentiful and in season and throw it in the box. It works for me: What I give up in choice is made up for in convenience.

I signed up for the farm-share a couple months ago, and it's made a huge difference on my vegetable intake. Every Thursday I go home with too many greens to fit them all in the veggie drawer of my fridge. My concern these days isn't eating my veggies—it's making sure I don't let anything go to waste. My hatred for throwing out perfectly good food forces me to eat vegetables, even when I don't feel like it. Luckily, I have a roommate who is more than happy to eat my cooking. And homemade salads are a much cheaper option than local lunch fare.
