Leaked Video Shows Australia’s Prime Minister Roasting Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s childish antics, outright lies, and dismissive attitude toward America’s allies has diminished the country’s standing on the world stage. After Trump’s embarrassing performance at the NATO summit, German Chancellor Merkel declared that Europe “must really take our fate into our own hands.” On Wednesday, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has turned to outright mocking the president, evidenced by a leaked video from the Midwinter Ball.

In the video, Turnbull does a Trump impersonation while describing a meeting with the President last month. “The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much. We are winning like we have never won before. We are winning in the polls,” he said to a room of journalists. “We are! We are! Not the fake polls. Not the fake polls! They’re the ones we’re not winning in. We’re winning in the real polls. You know, the online polls. They are so easy to win … I have this Russian guy.”

The Midwinter Ball is the Australian equivalent of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, where politicians and journalists come together to let their hair down and crack a few jokes. After footage of the speech hit the press, Turnbull said his impression was “light-hearted, affectionately light-hearted,” and that it’s “a breach of protocol, it’s a breach of faith and all those things, but it’s light-hearted, affectionate, good natured.” The relationship between the two heads of state got off to a rocky start last February when Trump reportedly berated Turnbull over a refugee agreement he had made with president Obama.
