Stop the Pity: How Hollywood Stereotypes Depict African Men

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSElmEmEjb4&list=UU9Apk-3mISZUQfZiwHMLYdA&index=2

Hollywood would have us think that African men love shooting machine guns—from trucks, from boats, in the jungle, in bullet-riddled urban streets—and resort to rocket launchers when their machine guns run out of ammo.

Hollywood would have us think that all African men are stern, heartless, and vicious.

“If people believed only what they saw in movies, they would think we are all warlords who love violence," these guys said.

So here's a little dose of reality. I have said it before, and I will say it again: we are way more alike than the way we talk about power and poverty implies.

The Stop The Pity campaign is a push to bring a little sanity to the distorted and harmful way we depict normal human beings because of cultural, geographic, racial, and language differences.
