With news from Iraq focusing on the enormous political and sectarian problems, it’s easy to forget the there’s also a rich culture there-with a cuisine. So thanks to Lamees Ibrahim for collecting recipes for many of the country’s national dishes in The Iraqi Cookbook. She explains:“Although the book started as a collection of recipes for my children and our guests at various dinner parties, it quickly turned into my way of sharing the Iraq that I know and love with the the world. As is well known, modern Iraq arose from ancient Mesopotamian civilization. Many empires have passed through over the centuries and left their mark on the cuisine, creating links between Iraqi history, culture and food.”The Guardian has a number of recipes from the book online here. The Kubbat Mousel (from Mosul, an Iraqi city that’s been more famous for other reasons recently) looks especially delicious to me.

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories
Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.
While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.
When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.
Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
