In his latest column, Ben Jervey cited the current situation in Peru, where the government is trying to wrest parts of the Amazon away from indigenous people to open it up for oil drilling, as the wrong way for Latin American governments to turn resource-rich forests into money. (He suggests everyone follow Ecuador's interesting example instead.)Anyway, on that point, a quick update: some of the laws that were at issue in Peru are being "suspended" and the country's prime minister, Yehude Simon, is going to step down. So it looks like 1) Peru's approach did end up backfiring and 2) the situation is improving.
