San Francisco has a four-year plan to outfit itself with 1,100 new, solar-powered bus shelters. The first one was unveiled today and it's pretty stunning. The panels themselves are tucked into that wavy red element on the top, which was designed to evoke both the city's hills and its seismic activity. The solar energy will power the shelter's LED lights, a WiFi router, and "NextMuni displays and a push-to-talk system to read NextMuni information for the visually impaired." It's expected that there will be energy left over to sell back to the grid.Awesome. Now on to the rest of the world's horizontal surfaces! Your move, Portland.Via Inhabitat.
