GOOD 100: Meet Isa Adney, Redefining What it Means to Be a Student

Isa Adney was the first member of her family to go college. Now she is paying it forward by helping students navigate higher education. Like many students entering college for the first time, Adney had doubts as a freshman. Her website recounts a tear-filled memory of sitting in the community college advising office, wondering where life would take her after graduation.
Well, life has taken her in the right direction. Adney won the $110,000 Jack Kent Cooke scholarship, got her Masters of Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, wrote a book, and is now a full-time speaker, author, and consultant.
Adney’s book, Community College Success, was published in 2012 and is used in colleges across the country. She has also appeared on television, written for national publications, and hosts the show The SKiNNY on College Success.

Called a “community college superstar” by the White House, the Orlando, Florida-based 25-year-old continues to inspire students to achieve their dreams through her series of lectures given at colleges throughout the United States.
And Adney’s just getting started. She is now working on a second book—a memoir that will chronicle her journey learning Spanish for the first time, and trying to come to terms with her biracial identity.
“I will be learning Spanish, going to Puerto Rico for the first time, and trying to figure out how to feel whole when you feel like you are divided in half.”
Working with Pearson’s Student Relations team, Adney helped to create the student success blog and student success video series. She is now serving an ambassadorship for Pearson’s “One Professor Campaign,” which highlights the difference professors can make in their students’ lives.
