There is a global financial crisis, climate change, a health care crisis, two wars, and any number of other pressing issues that our elected representatives could ostensibly be dealing with. Instead, today we got the resolution (you can access the full text from within that link) proclaiming Michael Jackson to be “a global humanitarian and a noted leader in the fight against worldwide hunger and medical crises; and … an accomplished contributor to the worlds of arts and entertainment, scientific advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and global food security.” Thanks, Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee. I’m sure your constituents are being served well. The hilarious “whereases” in this bill paint a pretty funny picture of Jackson’s life. I’ll leave you with one, without further comment, except to say: That’s awkward.”Whereas on January 1989, the proceeds of one of Michael’s shows in Los Angeles were donated to Childhelp USA, the biggest charity organization against child abuse. In appreciation of the contributions of Michael, Childhelp of Southern California founded the `Michael Jackson International Institute for Research On Child Abuse.’”

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories
Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.
While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.
When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.
Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
