These Attractive Sneakers Become Trees When You're Done with Them

Dutch shoe company OAT Shoes' new sneakers biodegrade and become trees when you throw them out. Say hello to fashion's future.

The Dutch footwear brand OAT Shoes fully acknowledges that trying to be environmentally responsible can sometimes be difficult for the fashion conscious. “Choosing green often means having to make concessions on appearance, functionality, price or convenience,” the company’s website says. “Do you look at style and comfort, or ethical implications?”

OAT wants to make it so you don’t have to decide between the two.

The second-place winner at Amsterdam’s Green Fashion Awards last week, OAT’s “Virgin Collection” is the world’s first line of sneakers that, upon disposal, will biodegrade and sprout trees. The materials—some developed by OAT itself—are all easily broken down, and tree seeds packed in the lining will hopefully leave saplings where your sneakers once stood.

Finally, you can look cool and not feel guilty, comfortable in the knowledge that your fashion will one day beautify the world with literal shoetrees.
