Our hearts go out to the people of Oakland today, where the city is mourning the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by police on New Year's Day. Not too much to say here: 22-year-old Oscar Grant got in a scuffle on a train. When police arrived on the scene, Grant was pinned to the ground, where he lay for a while before he was shot and killed. Last night, peaceful protests grew violent after a series of rather horrifying-to-watch videos of the shooting (which we will not be linking to here) ended up on YouTube.The accused officer stepped down from his position shortly before he was to be questioned by the Bay Area Rapid Transit police force. An optimistic guess says justice will be served. Precedent in similar cases, however, says maybe not.
