The huge consulting conglomerate Mercer just released its annual list of the cities with the best quality of living. Vienna, Austria, tops the list. Switzerland, meanwhile, has three cities in the top 10. So does Germany. And the highest ranked city in America? Honolulu. (San Francisco is a close second.)The methodology, to the extent that Mercer explains it, looks pretty solid. Although they define “quality of living” as “the degree to which expatriates enjoy the potential standard of living in the host location,” it looks like a comprehensive set of criteria. The rankings take into account everything from public services to media freedom to the presence (or absence) of “troublesome and destructive animals and insects.”I’m a little surprised there aren’t more Scandinavian countries in the top ten, though.See the whole list here.Photo from flickr user reivax (cc).

Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories
Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.
While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.
When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.
Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
