The unemployment rate continues to rise, and in New York this week, the state unemployment insurance system crashed under pressure from attempts by an estimated 10,000 people per hour to log in to the system to file a new claim. With no end to the stream of lay-offs in sight, some newly unemployed people are turning to paid medical trials to raise extra dough. Though some of the tests seem ridiculous (hello, who would actually volunteer to test Ipecac Syrup?), others do provide researchers and drug companies with valuable information in developing new drugs. Would you participate in a study for cash?
