The imaginative folks at MIT's SenseAble City lab have a new project called Flyfire. The idea: Use a bunch of tiny, precision-controlled helicopters as "pixels" to create a 3D canvas in space. Clearly Flyfire is just an idea at this point, but that's how most innovations start out.
