It's been a rough week in Southern California. Although the fires didn't spread into Los Angeles proper, we were reminded that we were surrounded by them every time a newsperson said they were burning "from Santa Barbara to the Mexico border." The smoke in Los Angeles was pretty stifling.

Our thoughts are with the many who lost their homes.

President Bush designated the fires a "major disaster" and flew out today to see the damage firsthand.
