City 70/20/10
This is a riff on Google's agreement with employees to maximize each individual’s effectiveness. "In order to always develop leading edge ideas, Google empowers every one of their employees to think of their time as a whole, or 100 percent. When divided up, they require that each employee concentrate 70 percent on the main task, 20 percent on related tasks, and 10 percent on completely unrelated tasks or things that are completely new." In City 70/20/10, a city could adopt Google’s attitude and encourages its employers and citizens to do the same. The city would adopt this as a way of life. In a long tail environment, projects that were originally conceived in the 10 percent realm would begin to get developed. They would then move to the 20 percent category and begin to be profitable. Once they are completed through that phase, they roll into the 70 percent realm and are considered core to the business of the city.

This is part 46 of a continuing brainstorm on the future of cities, inaugurated at the CEOs for Cities Velocity conference in September, 2009. We’ll post a new idea each day until we run out, at which point we’re counting on you to come up with something smart. Do you have a good idea for improving your city? Add it in the comments below, or tweet it to @GOOD with hashtag #cityideas—we’ll publish the best ones. Tomorrow's idea:Tech Mission.
