John Oliver Just Broke Down America’s Huge Food Waste Problem

Just giving the uneaten food away isn’t as easy as you might think.

What do grocery stores do with all the food they don’t sell? In Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver decided to investigate, and what he found was disturbing. Food waste in America is a much bigger problem than many people realize, and right now there’s not a lot that we can do to stop it. Grocery stores and restaurants are being forced to dump their unsold food into landfills because there are no tax breaks to make donating it financially viable. Farms are throwing out food before it even reaches the shelves because of American consumers’ ridiculous aesthetic standards for produce, and the list goes on. In this segment, John Oliver breaks down exactly how food waste is affecting America and the planet as a whole, and what is being done to prevent it.
