On Sunday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote a post about his goals for 2016, which include “To build a simple AI to run my home and help me with my work. You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man.” Given Zuckerberg’s tremendous success as a tech entrepreneur, Facebooker Darlene Loretto commented on his post: “I keep telling my grand daughters to Date the nerd in school, he may turn out to be a Mark Zuckerberg!”
Although her comments were complimentary of Zuckerberg, they revealed the soft prejudice of lowered expectations our culture holds for women in the fields of math and science. Zuckerberg’s response to her comment was fantastic: “Even better would be to encourage them to *be* the nerd in their school so they can be the next successful inventor!”

Zuckerberg’s post got some great responses from proud female nerds.
Loretto later clarified her response on her own Facebook page.
