A Trabant is a petite, plastic, Soviet-era car that rocks the socks off those who can fit inside. Knowing that, a band of globetrotters eight deep has embarked on a remarkable quest: traveling from Germany to Cambodia in three such autos. With a route that takes them through Central Europe, Central Asia, Siberia, Mongolia, and China, the troubadours (called Trabant Trek) have their work cut out for them--not only because the cars might not make it, but also because they plan to serve the communities of the towns through which they pass. Their ultimate goal is to "raise awareness for the global issue of street children and $300,000 for the charities M'Lop Tapang and Mith Samlanh." At a time when the term "voluntourism" is beginning to feel commodified, self-serving, and downright trite, these brave visionaries are doing something worthy.
