Beautiful Underground

Add this Japanese sewer system to your list of unconventional tourist destinations. For the last 16 years, Saitama, Japan has been building a remarkable new storm water management system that's architecturally reminiscent of the set of a modern Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles full-length feature or that Korean river monster movie The Host.

Since 1979, typhoons and other intense rainfall has caused six major floods in the Saitama metropolitan area. Its engineers say the new water discharge channel will reduce the flooded area by about 80%.
