The designer Leonardo Aranda drew up this colorful chart showing how teams advanced through the NCAA basketball tournament between 1985 and 2009. It appears that, while fifteenth seed teams have sometimes advanced past the first round, no sixteenth seed team has ever upset a first seed team. See a larger version.
