This weekend, I saw a terrific film at a great independent theater—the Clay on San Francisco's Filmore Street which opened in 1910—but the experience was tempered somewhat by the discovery that the Clay is closing for good at the end of August, another victim of the Multiplex. The next day? News that independent bookstore Modern Times, neighbor to the amazing 826 Valencia is struggling to stay afloat. One of the few remaining independent, collectively run, politically progressive bookstores in North America, Modern Times has sent out a call for help. For just $10 you could be one of the many to help them keep their doors open at least long enough to see their 40th anniversary.
