New Year’s HOLLYWeeD Prank Inspires Hilarious Twitter Memes

There's a long history of Hollywood sign pranks.

The Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. It’s a ray of hope to aspiring actors hopping off the bus hoping to make it in the movies. It also represents America’s thriving entertainment industry to the rest of the world. Originally, it was a commercial sign for an upscale real-estate development that read HOLLYWOODLAND. The last four letters were removed when the real estate company transferred ownership of the sign to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1949.

Over the years, the Hollywood sign began to deteriorate until it was replaced by a group of donors including Hugh Hefner and Alice Cooper in 1978. Over the years, the landmark has been the target of pranksters and vandals. It read OLLYWOOD for a spell in the ‘80s to protest Oliver North’s Iran-Contra deal and was changed to PerotWOOD by Ross Perot supporters in the 1992 presidential election. On New Year’s Day, the sign was back in the news after vandals changed it to read HOLLYWeeD.
