Thomas Friedman once wrote that no two countries which both have McDonald's have ever attacked each other. More recent events have rendered this observation incorrect, but it's still a fairly good rule of thumb about the power of globalization (and also the addictive power of fatty, salty foods). To wit, look how happy the people of Moscow were to get their first McDonald's. After 50 years of anger, imagine how much those people love us for bringing them a Big Mac:
