Jake Gyllenhaal just endorsed a candidate in the midterms and Twitter had a freakout.

The biggest Democratic star to emerge from the 2018 midterm elections is, without a doubt, Beto O’Rourke. The Democratic challenger to Ted Cruz’s Texas Senate seat has attracted the nation’s attention for his compassionate vision of America — a stark contrast to that of his acerbic opponent.

Although he’s running to represent Texas, O’Rourke has become a popular figure in Hollywood. Celebrities have been ponying up big bucks for his campaign and endorsing him on social media.

The latest to come out for O’Rourke is actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The “Nightcrawler” and “Brokeback Mountain” star posted a photo of himself wearing a “Beto” T-shirt on Sunday, November 4.

“Vote for change, for compassion, for civility, for wisdom,” Gyllenhaal captioned his photo. “Vote because you think the government doesn’t effect you or there’s no such thing as a good politician. Vote because you can, because we fight for rights by exercising them. Vote for Stacey Abrams and Beto O’Rourke and Andrew Gillum.”

The famously private actor has no problem being political. He claims he was encouraged to speak up for his beliefs by Barack Obama. “I had the privilege to meet President Obama,” he told The Guardian, “and he told me: ‘You have a job as an artist to help people through difficult times, to illuminate things through art.’ He said: ‘That’s your job.’ ”

Gyllenhaal’s endorsement of a Democratic candidate enraged more than a few conservatives on Twitter. Some complained that celebrities shouldn’t get involved in politics (reality TV stars not included).

And, of course, liberals were happy that Gyllenhaal stuck his neck out for O’Rourke in a close race.
