John Wayne Is Watching You

In the library of Lubbock Christian University, a 12-ton sculpture of John Wayne's head keeps watch over studying coeds.

Lubbock Christian University has two main claims to fame: Meat Loaf was briefly a member of the student body, and in the library there is a 12-ton sculpture of John Wayne's head, vigilantly keeping watch over studying coeds. In 1977, artist Brett-Livingstone Strong (whom, according to his Wikipedia page, was once called "a modern day Michelangelo" by Michael Jackson) fashioned The Duke's face out of a chunk of boulder that fell onto a highway in Malibu. Originally Strong intended to carve the rock into the face of California's once-and-future governor Jerry Brown, but sometimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do.
