Every spring, The Great Western Alpaca Show brings breeders, buyers, sellers, and just plain enthusiasts of the noble beast that is the alpaca to the National Western Complex in Denver, Colorado. Somewhere between juried-stock-show and craft fair, the Show sees alpaca wool ponchos, plush alpaca-wool-stuffed-alpaca toys, alpaca art, and alpacas themselves up for sale. Last year, there were 1,200 entries from 29 states. It’s a pretty incredible affair.”I think that any convention is slightly awkward for outsiders-and that is part of the appeal, for me,” says the photographer Ross Evertson, who visited the 2007 show and produced these remarkable images. “Whether it is Comic-Con or alpacas, some people are going to be very dedicated to the life style, so to speak, and for most others it is bizarre and intriguing spectacle. It results in an interesting tension of warmth and skepticism between both groups.”-Are you a photographer with a project you would like to share with the GOOD community? Why mass shootings spawn conspiracy theories
Mass shootings and conspiracy theories have a long history.
While conspiracy theories are not limited to any topic, there is one type of event that seems particularly likely to spark them: mass shootings, typically defined as attacks in which a shooter kills at least four other people.
When one person kills many others in a single incident, particularly when it seems random, people naturally seek out answers for why the tragedy happened. After all, if a mass shooting is random, anyone can be a target.
Pointing to some nefarious plan by a powerful group – such as the government – can be more comforting than the idea that the attack was the result of a disturbed or mentally ill individual who obtained a firearm legally.
