If you've ever taken a psychology class, you may have heard of Alex the African gray parrot.
He was famous. He had a vocabulary in the hundreds of words, could answer questions about number and color, and "could express frustration, or apparent boredom" (emotion!).
He died last Friday. His abilities went way beyond the assumed limits for parrots. And so does our grief.
His last words, to his longtime trainer, were "You be good, see you tomorrow. I love you."
