California's "three strikes" law has, as hoped, reduced recidivism rates. But if you've got two strikes already, then any felony-from having weed to armed robbery-gets you locked up for life. Your incentive, if you're carrying two strikes, is to go big if you're going to break the law again. And according to this piece on Slate, that's just what they do.
