Video: Well-Designed Buildings Sway, But Stay Standing in Japan Quake

Japan's engineers deserve a big pat on the back.

Japan is hit with about one fifth of the world's most powerful earthquakes so, over the years, the country has taken preparation seriously. When it comes to engineering buildings, that means giving them deep foundations and sometimes even seismic shock absorbers that bear the brunt of an earthquake's force and help keep a structure from collapsing.

In the clip above, you can see well-engineered buildings in the Shinjuku neighborhood sway, but stay standing, during today's devastating earthquake. It's a somewhat anticlimactic video. And thank God (or maybe science) for that. Japan's engineers deserve a big pat on the back.
