Amsterdam: Your Money's No Good Here

Contributing to the volatility of this week's economic mess, Americans abroad are finding the once-coveted U.S. dollar to be worth less each day...and in some cases, as in Amsterdam, worth absolutely nothing.

Due to the dollar's rapidly plummeting value against the euro, small currency outlets in the Dutch capital are turning away visitors attempting to exchange money, making travel increasingly inconvenient and costs increasingly uncertain.

The dollar's value reached nearly record lows on Monday with one euro valued at $1.58. Contrast that with $1.47 a month ago and $1.25 two summers ago. (Insert your own quip about the ironic potential of greenbacks serving as roll paper.)
