Amy Schumer Speaks Up Against Hollywood’s Insane Body Standards

“I just found out I’m too disgusting for L.A.”

Amy Schumer, patron saint of brashness, did a five minute set at Comedy Central’s Night of Too Many Stars autism benefit this week and took Hollywood’s insane beauty standards to task while she was at it.

During the short but stinging set, Schumer spoke about her personal experiences with body image after being cast as the lead in her upcoming film Trainwreck. “I just found out I’m too disgusting for L.A.,” she told the crowd.

Written by Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow, the film was surely going to star a pretty, skinny Hollywood star named Kate, assumed Schumer. When the studio decided to cast her instead and tasked her with getting fit for the big screen, the comedian began to wonder if this was worth skipping her two daily lunches for.

The Comedy Central star didn’t just focus on the physical, ending the set with a sharp jab at the inequity of the sexes in comedy. “I think that I get labeled a sex comic because I’m a woman,” she posed. “Like, I feel like a guy could get up here and pull his dick out and everyone would be like ‘He’s a thinker.’”
