Padang Padang Shipwreck

We hope you've had time to read Eric Smillie's "Beautiful Messes: A Travel Guide to Man-Made Disasters" in our current issue. It's painful to do this, but we might have found another, more recent, destination.

Padang Pandang, a world-class left-hand reef break in Labuhan Sait, Bali, is now home to an abandoned Taiwanese fishing boat that's currently leaking waste and destroying an amazing ecosystem. Surfline has an amazing photo essay of the crash site and clean-up effort. It's augmented by this update, which not only describes the valiant effort to remove the boat from the reef, but also discusses the potential outcomes of this very scary and very unresolved situation.
