Citizen Architect, a documentary about the late architect Samuel Mockbee, will air tonight on your local PBS station. Mockbee (better known as "Sambo") was famous for founding the Rural Studio, a program that has sent Auburn University architecture students into low-income areas of Alabama to design and build sustainable, affordable housing for local residents since 1993. In doing so, Mockbee transformed Hale County, Alabama into an epicenter for design-for-good, drawing hundreds of thousands of students, volunteers and tourists to the area, including two of GOOD's favorite programs, Project M, and PieLab.
The film addresses many of the issues currently swirling around the humanitarian design debate, featuring design world luminaries like architect Peter Eisenman and Architecture for Humanity's Cameron Sinclair, as well as colorful characters like Music Man, who exuberantly inhabits one of the Rural Studio's most famous structures.
