Sesame Street writer Joey Mazzarino, the white parent of an adopted Ethiopian girl, was concerned about his daughter's ongoing fascination with the long, flowing locks of Barbie, Disney princesses, and Miley Cyrus. He thought it was an issue related to her white parents but after the release of Chris Rock's documentary, Good Hair, Mazzarino realized the hair frustration she experienced was a far bigger issue. Though he wrote the sweet song "I Really Love My Hair," for Sesame Street with his daughter in mind, the resulting video of a brown Muppet, meant to represent an African-American girl, singing, "Don't need a trip to the beauty shop because I love what I got on top," has become a YouTube sensation, visited by over a quarter of a million people—and of course inspiring countless variations on a theme.
