This island in the Gulf of Mexico was once a safe haven for migrating birds and other wildlife. Since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, it’s been slowly disappearing and will likely be gone in a year. Studies show that birds return to the place of their birth to breed themselves – but with their birthplace nearly gone, some birds simply aren’t breeding. Oil is still washing ashore on the island today as scientists work to restore it.
