Powered by Yaris and Urban Outfitters, Free Yr Radio has released a benefit compilation that features such artists as !!!, The Walkmen, No Age, Dan Deacon, and Jaime Lidell. One can purchase said comp over at Insound for a mere 99 cents. But even at that price, why would one be inclined to purchase said comp in this, the age of downloadus gratis? Because the proceeds go to support "independent non-commercial radio."Is there, perhaps, an inherent contradiction in the concept of two giant companies teaming up to support independent radio? Maybe. But I've spent the past few days cycling through the record (track list below) and it's pretty damn solid. It reminds us how a well-curated mix-especially one comprised of either new or old-but-live tracks-can be a worthy purchase (especially when it's for an even more worthy cause).01 !!!: "Must Be the Moon (Live at KEXP)"02 Chairlift: "At My Side"03 Yeasayer: "Final Path (Daytrotter Sessions)"04 White Williams: "Blue Steel"05 Dan Deacon: "Cave Birth"06 No Age: "Padded Chair"07 Mudhoney: "The Lucky Ones (Live)"08 King Khan & Saba Lou: "Past and Gone"09 The Secret Machines: "The Walls Are Starting to Crack (Live at KEXP)"10 The Walkmen: "In the New Year (Live)"11 Tokyo Police Club: "Your English Is Good (K-Os Remix)"12 Jamie Lidell: "Rope of Sand (Live at Austin City Limits)"Standouts include hard-crooning closer Jaime Lidell's "Rope of Sand," as well Dan Deacon's "Cave Birth" and No Age's "Padded Chair," which fill the mix with a warm and wonderful middle section. And The Walkmen's live version of "In the New Year" is just rough enough around the edges to differentiate it from the astoundingly good album version on last year's You and Me. It's the sort of song that makes a midday bender seem like a good idea.
